My wife Barbara has spent all her life in Tibshelf and just recently moved to Sutton-in-Ashfield. Her parents were Tom & Jean Brooks. Tom had a business, in the village called T. A. Brooks Sheds & fencing. What I am after is the history of this land that Tom owned as it was prevoisly owned by his family and called Richards yard and also had Dr, Grahams surgery there. Do you have any comments?I was born at 18 St Thomass Row in 1945. Second of seven children, Reg, John, Bill, Pete, Jean, Margaret and June by Mrs Lizzie & Pete Wood. I have cousins, the Blairs, Taylors, nieces and nephews still in the area. I now live in Bognor Regis. I joined the Royal Navy from school then joined the Rhodesian army.
I recognise every photo on this web page.

I have visited before.

My grandfather was from Tibshelf but left in 1921 to come to the U.S. I have been there and found my great Grandparents grave site in the Church yard. It is a large black stone with Martha and Edwin Vaughan on it. Does anyone know of Vaughans in the area? Or who may take care of the headstone.

I love this site,being as I live in Australia.I was born in Tibshelf, and left in 1964
.Lovely to see photos.It's correct,many people failed 11plus exam but achieved much.I joined WRAF,worked on Air Traffic Control,then also in civilian life.Then changed careers,gained University degrees in Accountancy and Law.What does that say about 11 plus exam?! Love to know about Tibshelf now.Thanks for site. Celia Webb

I was born in Tibshelf, and then moved to 13 West View, age 4. I left Tibshelf to join the WRAF in 1965. Went to Singapore with WRAF, then went on to work in Zambia for 4 years, teaching Air Traffic Control. After Zambia came to live in Australia - studied for degree as accountant, but then became an officer in Salvation Army. Still am, but retire soon.

Looking for Tibshelf history.

I was born in Tibshelf and was in the same class as Tom Hullatt never managing to beat him in the school sports. As a boy I remember young Pit Ponies arriving by train at Tibshelf station and being herded up High street to Johnny Barbers farm just past the White Hart pub, prior to them being sold to the mining companies. Another memory I have is playing as a child by the brook at the bottom of Brook street and seeing the miners coming off their shift covered in coal dust down the footpath from the old "Top Pit" ( now the "SAPA industrial site") when it closed I went with Arthur Andrews from the butchers shop in Newton on a horse and cart to help load some old pit props, etc. for firewood. During the war I lived in Newton and could see trains arriving with loads of pit props that were then stacked in the Old bottom pit yard, this work was done by stevedors that had been drafted down from Immingham docks and local women one of whom was my mother, from there they were sent to local coalmines.
