Re: Re: multimedia

Hey Vincent, thanks for your message. The SHARKFEED site was put together by three people. An artist who was a writer/photographer who developed the 'storyboard' and handled the overall direction of the visual material, a graphic designer/programmer who really worked out how to deliver it, and I did co-writing and sound design. It has been designed to be hosted within the features and documentary area of ABC arts (radio-eye) and needed to fulfill all the usual editorial expectations of that. It was made with quite a large sum of monetary assistance from the Australian Film Commission. A version of the work was also displayed at the Museum of Sydney last year during the Olympics.

Most interesting thing from the sound point of view is the degree of limitation imposed by RealAudio. The main thing is that things that would work as say, a stereo mix, DON'T work for the web. We also had to scale it down to the lowest level of delivery to ensure that the majority of people could access it - which was the main reason for doing it in the first place.

In our case - I have to say that I have been very disappointed with the response from the official MULTIMEDIA types here at the ABC who seem incapable of talking about CONTENT at all... they can only talk standards. An interesting attempt to bring elements of the radio feature/documentary to the internet. Very keen to hear what others will make of this...

Best wishes to radio-making colleagues everywhere, especially those I had the pleasure to meet in Warsaw....

OK Matthew, thanks a lot. How are things over there? Didn't we last meet in Warsawa? And didn't you travel to Greece??

I can advise others: visit www.abc.net.au/sharkfeed

and surpise yourself. Hannu and I will see what we can do with this. Untill now we're collecting possible contributions for the workshop. Looks good what you've made.

Did you design it, was it a team? Were they internet-spcialist or (radio) documentarymakers? About this we'll be in contact late,r

Hope we'll meet in your place, Sydney of the third millenium.

Greetings, have a good Christmastime over there (no snow, it must be paradise) and beautiful New Year!

Re: Re: Re: Re: multimedia

Hi Vincent, Sydney is a bit doubtful for me at the moment as I'm about to leave the ABC and begin work at Radio New Zealand. However I'd love to be able to present, discuss and share the experience of Sharkfeed with interested makers. I've already been contacted by a couple of people which has been really terrific.

Best wishes, Matthew

Re: multimedia

Hi,

I visited the Sharkfeed site and I’d like to know how traditional radio is used in that project. Does the Sharkfeed project contain a radio documentary/documentaries about the same theme?

I have been working for over a year now with a project, where I’ve made radio documentaries and a web site on the same subject and it has been interesting to see how the relationship between between independent radio documentaries and the web site has evolved during the process.

Best wishes,

Katarina Blomqvist

Re: Re: multimedia

Hi katarina, Matthew Leonard from the ABC here. I worked on the Sharkfeed project. If I understand your question - you want to know whether there is a radio documentary WITHIN the Sharkfeed project. The answer to that is no. There is a separate radio

documentary/feature which I have made about the same topic which

shares only the subject matter and some of the archival material.

Sharkfeed was an attempt however to bring some of the processes we associate with radio feature and documentary making to a new form that is still developing ways of delivering narrative and experience. The work tries to deliver different threads of the story, assuming however that people may well NOT visit every part of the site, and also may not be able to download the sound. In Australia, a lot of people in rural areas do not have fast servers and this means that the piece needs to work without the sound element if need be. Sharkfeed was not intended to be a simulacrum or substitute for the radio form, but a hybrid of: the editorial processes of radio, the possibilities of presenting multiple narratives and commentary, and the enhancing possibilities of the visual material. While you and I might be trying to ceate purpose-built work for the internet, a lot of people still see the material created for the web as merely a

good promotional opportunity. Let me know if this answers your question. I'd be keen to see some of the work you've done if you can point me to it.

multimedia: the van lennep project

Hi Katarina,

heard about you from Hannu. If you're interested: visit www.vanlennep.nl

which is a tv/radio/internet/book production of RVU, with elements out of a serial of radio- and television documentaries. It was all based on a book from 1823, a walk through the Netherlands of these days. Last year the producers walked the same trip again, wondering about changes in landscape and society.

Kind regards,

Vincent
