It's simply, and I'll use terms you can understand, since you lack the basic education to understand more technical terms.
Do you understand the term drag?
Air pressure causes resistence to all objects passing through it, this is called drag. Drag is a function of air pressure, speed and resistence.
If you hold a flag and run with it, you can feel the air resistence on the flag.
Upper descents work in a similar way, they simply create more drag, which slows the object, which allows them to create more drag, further slowing the object.
If you deployed a normal parachute at speed, yes, it would be torn apart, but this is not done. Drag is increased, which slows the object, this slowing allows for even more drag to be introduced, which in turn slows the craft even more.
Imagine if long sheets of cloth were deployed, hanging behind the re-entry vehicle. Such sheets would slow the craft, the more sheets of cloth and the longer each sheet, the more slowing that would occur. Each sheet would cause drag slowing the craft.
Here is your choice, you either have to reject that drag slows objects, or admit your are wrong. This is because if slows objects, it's just a matter of HOW the drag is introduced.
If single sheets were deployed one at a time, the craft would slow with each deployment, eventually the speed would be reduced enough to deploy a normal chute.
Drag is increase via the Drogue chut until a normal chut can be deployed.
