Appleby Ancestors

I was so pleased to find your website about Appleby. My family on my mother's side came from Appleby. My Grandmother Ellen Hall married Harry Reynolds, who was the policeman at Broughton, at Appleby Church in l901. It seems that he was courting her sister Mabel but something happened and he married Ellen. Ellen was born in l875 and had more than one sister. The sisters were said to be very beautiful. Their mother ran Appleby Post Office.
My Grandmother Ellen was cook to Lady St Oswald at Nostall Priory. I don,t know if she worked her way up to that position but I remember her as a very good plain cook, she made wonderful custard tarts among other things. She used to tell me how they served pheasants at the Priory with the tail feathers put back before sending them to the table. Lady St Oswald's name was Mabel Susan and Grandmother named her first daughter (she had 4 daughters but no sons) Mabel Susan. I have managed to establish that the gentleman who lived at the Hall at Appleby owned the steelworks at Scunthorpe and was brother to Lord St Oswald, so maybe that is how Grandmother got her job there. The name Hall means one who worked at the hall so probably her father was employed by the owner, possibly for generations back. I do come from good Lincolnshire peasant stock!
There are many gravestones in Appleby Churchyard relating to the family. Great-grandfather Hall had brothers and I know nothing of them. His wife Emma died Feb 26th l9l9 aged 85.
I believe their son was Thomas. He and his wife Eliza Hall had a son Harold Thomas who died l3 July 1904 age 25. and Maud Mary their only daughter who died 10 March l905 aged 29. Claude John their youngest son died 1st March 1906 aged 21. What terrible times they were before modern medicines arrived to save us all.
My Grandmother's sister Mabel married Charles Henry Thompson of Appleby who died 23 July l908 aged 46. They had sons. Frederick Henry died 29 October l906 aged 18 days.
Hubert John died 10 July l9l9 aged 14 years of meningitis. Bernard William aged l6 died 13 April l920 also from meningitis. These two boys were apparently very clever and at the grammar school. Their mother Mabel died 20 July l935 aged 53. The only daughter Bessie died 4 January l945 of tuberculosis. My grandmother and her husband Harry moved around Lincolnshire as policemen did at that time. My mother, the 3rd daughter, was born at Hibaldstow. My grandmother spoke of living in Ussleby, Mablethorpe and eventually they came to live in Lincoln when Grandfather was made a police Inspector.
My parents are now both deceased, but my mother's younger sister Ella is still alive at age 92. I am the only female decendent of the 4 daughters. One daughter died aged 20, one never married, my mother had me, and Ella had three sons. They now all live in the south of England, so now I am the only one still in Lincolnshire as far as I know. The rest of the family, if there are any more in Lincolnshire, are all unknown to me.

Hope you will find this interesting, and that it will add a bit more to the history of Appleby
Best wishes.
