A Shoreline Ride with Candy

The last couple of days here on Long Island have been sunny and beautiful. On Tuesday I ran some errands using the Zen. Around 30 miles later I got home, had lunch, and took a nap. Yesterday I awoke to another sunny day, so I got my boy off to school, then decided to ride Candy - my off-street Street - down to Long Beach. No mirrors, bells, kickstand, and just a frame pack, and knobby tires. At first I was questioning my sanity. Surely it'd take forever, given the knobbies and the weight. I put my iPod on, got some classic rock goin',and just went. After all, what was my rush?

I got down to the boardwalk, rode it for a minute or two, and then did something I'd always wanted to try. I rode down the boardwalk ramp onto the beach, and stopped cold as Candy plowed the sand. So I walked the bike down to the water's edge, and got on. I was able to ride along the shore, finding the differences between sand that was damp, and that which had been packed down, and I found a sweet spot that gave just the right amount of grip without giving up too much speed. I stopped after a few minutes to see if the sand was getting stuck to the drivetrain, and was pleased to see that it was not. It barely stuck to the tires, unless I rode through the water a little and then up onto a dry stretch of sand.

I rode through flocks of seagulls, sand pipers, and crunched over shells and seaweed. The only place I had a problem was getting around some jettys (if thats what they call those piles of rocks they made that jut out into the ocean). Some of them extended into the beach where the sand was too soft. Others had spots that I could ride through. One had a rock that was long and flat and shaped like a ramp. So I went back and rode over it, flying off the other side. I felt like a kid again.

I probably rode 8 miles of beach in each direction, maybe more. It was a memorable ride. I wish I'd taken my camera. Next time.

Sounds like fun. I wonder if 2-2.35" Schwable Big Apples would make a proper sand tire?
