We rode the Duo as a couple yesterday

My wife took the day off at my request, since it was my >gasp< 43rd birthday.

Our boy was in school, so I spent less than ten minutes to remove the crank arm shorteners, put the pedals back, and swap out the modified seat Bryan uses with the seat from the Cruz. Then we got on and rode down to the beach. It was a beautiful day, sun shining, a breeze, and temps in the high sixties.

I was aprehensive about riding with my wife as stoker after our last couple of experiences (towing our son on a trail-a-bike), but this time without her having to worry about our son, she was relaxed about the ride. She put in her share of effort, and we had a few laughs while trying our best to tackle some climbs up and over bridges. We rode the boardwalk, stopped and watched some surfers, and took in some sun and sea air.

Then we headed home, hit a max of 25 mph on the down side of a bridge, and stopped off at a seafood place for a lunch. Then we rode home and I was talking about some of the rides I used to take with a buddy of mine, and how he had the stamina to keep up speed for long periods, but I could sprint. Told her about how we used to round the last turn onto the street we live on, and though unspoken, that was our signal to do an end of ride sprint to my garage. I took him most every time. I'd hit 34 mph in a sprint on my road bike. So as we rounded the very same corner on the Duo, I could sense that she was gearing up. We went for it, and next thing I know we've got the Duo up to 23 mph in the space of two blocks. Ok, so we're a bit slower than I was on the roadbike, but given that we were pushing several hundred pounds of rider, and a pretty heavy bike with saddlebags and water and so on, that's pretty good. And we had a laugh doing it. We did a cool-down lap around the block, and put the bike away.

It was a nice way to spend a couple of hours with my wife, and I look forward to the chance to do it again.

Oops, forgot the best part...

While on the boardwalk, I came up with the idea for me to be the stoker and for her to be captain. We were quite the sight to see...

We wobbled. We listed left, then right, then stopped, then went. We made it about three feet. We laughed a whole lot though. I could not wrap my head around being unable to steer, and my wife was very nervous, so she was hardly able to steer. It would not work for us. I told my wife I can now appreciate the trust she has in me as we ride the tandem, because I don't know if I could do it even with an experienced captain at the helm.

The few times I needed to ride on a back of a motorcycle I felt the same way.

Re: We rode the Duo as a couple yesterday

Happy b-day Eric, and what a fun way to spend it. My lady has be riding 3-4x per week now on the shorty aqua Fusion. Last week she got a rear flat tire and I didn't have time to swap it, so I brought home the shorty Zenetik Road. Initally see said it was too big (at 5'1"), but later she reported back it cut 5 minutes off her regular loop. I am going to try a rear curved riser to bring the bars closer on the Road, and she wants more rugged tires on the Fusion...even mtb stuff (more on how that goes later, I took a photo of Tavia on a secluded singletrack trail and now my wife wants to be able to ride to that exact spot... so I'll have to upload the shot).

It's sure fun with our SO's take to cycling, and even more so when their fitness improves and they start seeing results. We are already planning her first 25-25mi organized ride, that she could be ready for in another month.

Regards,
~Nanda
