How did the Lizard come to be named the Lizard?

Hi Andrea.

The name comes from the Cornish 'lys ardh', meaning Court on a high place.

Early forms of the name (for the village and the cape) are Lisart, Lusart, 1086; Lesard, 1302; Lesarth, 1323; Lishard, 1330; Lysart, 1427; Lezard, 1451; Lyzart, c.1540; Lyzer, 1583; Lesard, 1585; Lisard, 1586; Leasard, 1587; Lizard, 1675; Lezart, 1692.

The name would signify that the Lizard was an administrative centre for local chieftains before the Saxon conquest in 838 and there was still a Manor of Lizard after that date. The Manor of Lisart or Lusart is mentioned in Domesday in 1086.
